Heading into week 8 of the college football season the Heisman trophy has its front runners. All of which are deserving in their own right, but there are plenty of other players having great season that have enough time to make it to New York.
Kaleb Johnson – RB Iowa
Yeah yeah make the jokes you want about Iowa and offense, but Kaleb Johnson is an absolute stud at the running back position. Johnson has 12 touchdowns and 937 yards through 6 games. He is on pace to not only break the Iowa single season record
Cade Klubnik
Clemson got embarrassed by Georgia week 1. There is not getting around it. But since then the Tigers have done nothing but destroy the competition they have faced, and Cade Klubnik has put up some very impressive numbers.
Klubnik has thrown for 17 tds and over 1,500 yds with just two interceptions. The
Bryson Daily
Heisman voters love story lines, and Army has potential to not only be the story of the year, but maybe story of the century this season. Army is currently undefeated and is on the short list of favorites to win the American conference. Bryson Daily is the quarterback of Army and his weekly stiff arm highlights have been a personal favorite of mine this season.
Daily’s stats don’t jump of the page, but if the Black Knights can get the G5 spot in the playoff, there will certainly be a discussion around inviting Daily to New York.
Garrett Nussmeier
Nussmeier propelled himself back into the Heisman discussion following the overtime victory over Ole Miss. What benefits Nussmeier currently is that LSU has been mostly immune to the early season SEC chaos. If he can continue to have game winning plays and LSU find their way into the playoff it will be difficult to not mention Garrett Nussmeier in the Heisman conversation.
Cam Skattebo
I don’t think enough people have acknowledged that Arizona State is currently 5-1 after being picked to finish dead last in the Big 12 this year.
The Big 12 is wide open this year. Let’s say the Sun Devils can make it to Arlington for the conference championship. What’s stopping the teams best player from crashing the party? He has 8 touchdowns and just under 800 yards on the season. Skattebo currently leads the country in broken tackles, yes even over Ashton Jeanty.
