Iowa Football Game 9: Now things are interesting

Iowa picked up their fifth win of the season over the weekend against Purdue. Despite coming in as under-dogs, the Hawkeyes showed up and dominated the Charlie Jones grudge match.

Finally

FINALLY!! This is the Iowa team we were expecting to watch this season. We saw the outstanding defense that we have come to know well, but we also finally saw an offense that has a level of consistency where Iowa can be a dominant team.

This was a genuinely good offense as well. It wasn’t 4 turnovers from the defense setting up a 20-yard drive for Iowa’s offense. It was Spencer Petras’s 2 touchdowns and 192 yards. It was Kaleb Johnson’s 200yds and a touchdown. In the Year of our Lord 2022 the Iowa Hawkeyes have a B10 offensive player of the week.

I’m not sure what it says about my standards as an Iowa Fan to be so excited about what many teams would consider usual amounts of offense, but I don’t care it feels great.

What does it mean

Now, this does make things interesting. Despite being 5-4, Iowa still has a chance at winning the Big 10 West with the loss Illinois took to Michigan State.

The path isn’t easy, but it is there. Iowa must win out, and Illinois needs to lose to Purdue or Northwestern. I know Iowa doesn’t control its own destiny, but as ridiculous as the Big 10 West has been this year it doesn’t feel all that crazy.

In addition to this, it puts the #FireBrian crowd in a little bit of a pickle. If you are in this crowd you can’t also be the same people rooting for Iowa to win a game and finish the season strong. Because if Iowa Finishes the year 7-5 8-4 it becomes more and more unlikely that Brian Ferentz is fired. So it’s now time for Iowa fans to draw the line in the sand. You either can ride out the season and hope for an eventful November, or you can be a downer and hope for Iowa to go 0-3 so Ferentz gets fired. Those are your only options.
