The Iowa Men’s Basketball team kicked off the Season Monday night with a win against Bethune-Cookman. From a night full of a lot of, action here are some takeaways from the game.
Good, but doesn’t matter
It’s hard to evaluate how to team is looking from day one. Obviously, they won by 30, but we do need to keep in mind it was Bethune-Cookman. I think anything less than a blowout would have been disappointing. A blowout here doesn’t exactly mean a blowout against Duke in a month.
It is good however to see that Iowa was able to take care of business in their bye game because many teams did not do that.
Regardless of if they played the little sisters of the blind or not, having hawkeye basketball, and all of the college basketball back feels like a gift.
Noteworthy Numbers
All 5 starters from this game scored in the double digits, led by Tony Perkins who had 16 points and 5 assists. Everyone played well, but Perkins definitely was the most impressive. Guy was all over the floor making his presence known.
During the off-season, we were given the narrative of this team being heavily led by Kris Murray. It’s only game one, but it appears that the talent is much more distributed amongst the team.
Looking ahead
Iowa’s non-conference this year is tougher than usual. Iowa has to go to Seton Hall and Clemson this month. This is in addition to hosting Georgia Tech for the B10/ACC challenge and a game against Duke in Maddison Square Garden. All of this takes place within the next month
There isn’t the usual month of “let’s score 150” games that we usually see. I think this is a good thing, the team gets tested early and we get to see where they are at early.
There is plenty of talent on this team, I don’t think it’s out of reach for them to come away from that slate 4-0 or 3-1.
It’s a good time to be an Iowa Basketball fan, this team is going to be fun. Get excited.
