Iowa Football Game 8: feeling good?

Iowa broke its losing streak over the weekend against Northwestern. The win now puts the team at 4-4 heading into the home stretch of the regular season. Here are some quick takeaways from the game.

As a Fan

2022 is a weird time to be an Iowa fan. I would not have assumed that we would have Anish Shroff calling Iowa “Flinstonian” this year, but it is what we have.

Considering this is the reputation of the team, I think as a fan we have to at least crack a smile after performances like this. Northwestern is horrible, but dominating any team feels good. This game never felt close, and after a tough month of football, it felt good to watch a game that didn’t feel like pulling hair.

The offense played consistently. The defense did their thing. Seeing both sides of the ball put together a strong showing is reassuring to see as a fan.

Once again, it is Northwestern. However, I think this was a big confidence boost for the players and fans. There are some big games coming up to finish the season with Purdue, Wisconsin, Minnesota, and Nebraska still left. A solid win heading into these games is huge for momentum.

What does this mean?

Well as fun as this game was, outside of Iowa this game doesn’t mean too much. A win against Northwestern isn’t impressing anyone, but I think Iowa did better than people expected. The total for this game was hovering around 31 and Iowa scored more than that by themselves.

Ultimately Iowa needs to carry this success into the next. The next game against Purdue carries a lot for this Iowa team. A win sets them up for a good spot to be bowl eligible as well as continue to get support from fans. Closing out the season with some wins will help win back so fans after a season of anger.
