Iowa Game 4 Recap: Feel Good Game

The Hawkeyes picked up their third victory of the season Saturday night at Rutgers. Although I did claim to be fairly nervous heading into this game the hawks took care of business convincingly in a comfortable win. Here are my takeaways.

The Offense Is Capable

Alright, we all are aware at this point that Iowa’s offense has struggled this season. However, it certainly has gotten better since week 1. Was this an offensive spectacle? No, but there’s a lot that gives hope to Iowa fans that have been looking for anything. In particular, this Spencer Petras pass.

The kid has it in him clearly. All I’m saying is maybe if the offensive line gives him a moment to set his feet for a throw maybe we would see more of this.

Additionally, the run game looked great. Leshon Williams averaged 5.8 yards a carry with 11 touches and Kaleb Johnson had 58 yards. This duo felt unstoppable and has shown a lot of promise for the future. Gavin Williams had a decent night as well but does need some recognition for just eviscerating a Rutgers player on a kickoff.

Defense continues to amaze

What’s left to be said about the defense that hasn’t been said already. These guys week in a week out save the day. The turnover machine that is the Iowa Defesene made its presence felt in this matchup causing 3 turnovers including a gorgeous pick-six from Caleb Dejean.

Despite the points generated on defense, it clearly isn’t enough for some spectators of the game.

People love to hate. I just don’t see a situation where two defensive touchdowns in a half is a bad thing. Points are points. I’m gonna take them either way regardless of who is scoring them. What matters is winning the game and if Iowa wins games with a lot of defensive points then so be it. I like defense anyway. Let them hate, I don’t care.

Next Week

Pretty much every Iowa fan has had this matchup against Michigan against Iowa circled on the calendar since January. Anytime a top 5 team comes to Iowa City it’s a huge deal. Especially when it means potentially getting revenge from last year’s Big Ten Championship Game embarrassment. While the announcement of an 11am kick-off was quite disappointing, I do still have high hopes for this game. It’s gonna take something special to get a win against Michigan, but crazy things tend to happen in Kinnick Stadium. The Hawkeyes should not be overlooked in this matchup.
