Iowa Football Game 4 Preview: I’m Nervous

The 2-1 Hawkeyes are hitting the road for the first time in 2022 this weekend as they head to New Jersey to take on Rutgers. Rutgers is currently 3-0 and looks the best they have in a while. Here are my thoughts heading into this game

Record-Setting

As of now, The total for this game is 33.5 making it officially the lowest total in college football history.

Honestly, I can’t blame Vegas for setting the line here. I think they should just keep setting it lower and lower until the over hits. We will get to week 10 and the opening total for Iowa vs Wisconsin will be 15.5. Additionally, I think it’s funny that this same Iowa offense has played in the two lowest pregame totals in college football. It’s so on brand for Iowa, they should hang up a banner for this accomplishment.

The Duel of Fates

Typically when we discuss a huge player vs player matchup it’s quarterbacks, perennials defenses, and maybe even really skilled wide receivers. But, when Iowa plays Rutgers, the attention is on the battle of two punters!

Tory Taylor deserves all the press in the world. He is the glimmer of hope and joy within the pit of despair that has been Iowa football this season. Adam Korsak, the punter at Rutgers, is also incredibly talented. These two are stars in making, team MVPs. This is the punt battle of the century.

I’m nervous

Pre-season this game didn’t worry me too much, but now that we are actually here I’m worried. Rutgers is not the roll-over team that it used to be. This team is good. I do believe Iowa has the skills necessary to get a win, but they also are very capable of fumbling this one.

This game is getting played at night and is a Scarlet out with custom jerseys. The game will most likely, sell out. Energy for this game is building and Rutgers fans are going all in.

All of this is slightly scary to see as an Iowa fan. Usually, we are the ones hosting a big night game, for the roles to be reversed just feels weird. I don’t like it, and it makes me more cautious heading into Saturday.

Iowa’s offense is already experiencing a lot of issues at the moment. It’s hard to imagine how any of those will go away or not get worse heading into an environment like this.

The feeling I have now is a similar feeling I had last year when Iowa traveled to Maryland for a night game. That had similar anticipation and build to it, and Iowa went in there and routed the Terps so maybe I’m overthinking it.

Iowa also has an underrated strong east coast representation. There were tons of Hawkeyes fans in College Park last year so I’m expecting something similar this weekend.

Regardless of all of this Iowa is going to need to play a good game if they want to win. I’m choosing to stay on the side of the positive heading into this game. Iowa always surprises me most when I’m skeptical of them. I believe that they can and will get it done, but it will not be easy in any way.

Go Hawks.
