It only took 7 hours, but Iowa got their 2nd win of the Season against Nevada this weekend. The less than favorable weather made this game an unfortunate situation from a viewing standpoint, but that didn’t stop me from watching. Here are my takeaways.
Offense??????
So 27 points is a large improvement to what the Iowa offense produced up to this point, but it’s not amazing. Nevada is not good. Just a week ago Incarnate Word put up nearly double the number of points Iowa did on them. Now, Iowa has never been a team to put on an offensive spectacle. If you expect Iowa to hang 40+ every game, you haven’t watched Iowa football very long. The offense just isn’t designed to put up crazy numbers, and I don’t think it really matters. With the defense in the state that it’s in, If Iowa can average 20+ points a game they will win 95% of their games. So while it wasn’t quite the show that a lot of fans wanted, the offense did what it needed to do. This is a step in the right direction.
I think this was a big step in getting their confidence up as well. Spencer Petras finally found the endzone. Multiple runs went for huge gains. There are a lot of things that went well. With Ragani and Johnson back in the lineup, I think things will be trending up offensively. With that being said, there is a long way to go till fans will be happy with what they are seeing. They need to continue to show that they are capable of scoring against Rutgers next week.
Baby steps guys. Baby steps.
Defense Doing What The Defense Does
There is much to be said about the Iowa defense after this game. They were perfect as they usually are. They are the reason Iowa is 2nd in Big Ten wins since 2020. I love Phil Parker. I love everyone on that side of the ball. They give me hope.
Next Week
Next week is a scary spot. Rutgers is not the embarrassing team we used to know them as. Thye is capable of creating commotion in games. With Iowa’s offense in the state that it is right now, you can’t be too comfortable heading into this game as an Iowa Fan. Iowa has Michigan coming to town the following week making this potentially a look ahead spot as well. Iowa is going to need to show up and play a good game to escape New Jersey with a win.
